I’m so utterly upset by this. What school is this?
-
Just watched the video again and his face makes me more angry. He won and looks so humiliated and defeated and his team mates are giving him props and dont even understand.
-
I hope the attention on all this is at least a learning moment for all his (white) teammates. They think they’re being there for him and really failed him. More importantly I hope all this attention works out best for that young man.
-
You are correct! They failed their teammate. The school failed him! The adults in the room failed him! Stripping this young man of his dignity this way is sinful! Shame, Shame and more Shame!
-
Agreed. I’ve since read that the coach argued until the ref started the injury clock, and then the young man made the decision. I’m anxious to hear fuller details. I wonder what the coach said to him both before and after.

The coach, teammates, and the bigoted ref failed this child, what a disgrace. Alan Maloney needs to be fired and if the principal of Buena does nothing about it, they should step down and remove themselves from leadership.
-
I'm sure that had he or his parents know that he would have to cut his locs to make the team he would have refused and quit the team. This is the ultimate in humiliation that is all to common for us.

Over 20 years ago I was going back to work and needed a new job. I went on many interviews, finally my recruiter told me "You are better qualified than the people they are picking, could you change your hair?" I agreed to straighten my natural hair. Then I went home and cried.
-
I will never forget that moment and will never let anyone conflate my ability with their opinion of my hair.
-
Wig next time, remove it after about six months of great job performance. LOL

Was there some rule the ref was citing as the basis for this? As dreds are not something that you grow overnight I would have to assume this young man has been allowed to wrestle before with them. What changed?

The Ref

If so then the person who should have taken one for the team is the coach, not this young man.pic.twitter.com/ySPotq1NIT

Exactly where was the Coach? And the Ref had to apologize for making a racial slur last year it was widely reported

I feel sick. As a kid, you expect to be protected. They applauded his degradation. I'm sick Soledad...immediately thought of forced assimilations.pic.twitter.com/NwZQXoC3hP

I would not be surprised if this was not the first time the issue of his hair came up. They just managed to figure out how to get him to capitulate to their demands.

The ref and the coaches of both teams should be fired, full stop.
