It is called a village. And that is what it takes to raise children beyond just coping.

Bertrand Russell proposed something like that in the 20’s. His idea was replicated in many places until the 70’s, I believe. No idea about the results but sounds pretty good.

Childcare would be easier but skills to resolve conflict would be crucial and values alignment key. I aim to create an "phygital" ecosystem with similar tenets but with a focus on social, conversational and project based learning. Inspired by many of Bucky's ideas.

This is how our family works, my aunts, grandparents, parents all live in different close or together constellations and did this their whole lives.

Mine too on the Hungarian side... But so many factors are splitting families apart (and it's cultural... is this how it's been for a while in the UK??)

I’m all for that in better times, although in the early days of the Chinese outbreak, afaik, the vast majority of transmission was happening within family units so for this particular disease profile I think mixed young and old households could be quite dangerous..?

Was reading about housing co-ops a while back and have been wondering whether they've been coping differently. Not always multi-generational though. Even in normal times it does seem absurd that we atomise so many tasks that could be done collectively in community...

I live in a housing co-op (8 of us, aged 23-59) and it's absolutely the best place to be right now! Sharing responsibilities & resources, deep connection and community. And since we're our own landlord, we've been able to do things like rent reductions/holidays where needed
