Please provide a reference we could verify. The best I found were students' papers where they actually implement raw MD5 (and achieve poor speeds at it) on some FPGA, then sometimes make claims about this impacting md5crypt (sometimes not even realizing it's 1000 iterations).

Your implementation definitely sounds novel, but surely there have been some RTL jockeys doing earlier FPGA implementations?

I'd have thought so too, but so far
@bsdphk's anecdotal evidence is the best we have. I'd appreciate anything more specific. Thanks!

Somebody implemented md5crypt in a classified ASIC/DSP/FPGA farm around 1996-1998 some time. They told me in '99 that it was done as a single MD5 engine with a state-machine to drive the md5crypt scheme, and that it was "slow and bothersome." - which made me happy.

Thanks! "Classified" means we won't be able to verify this claim, but at least the description is plausible. "ASIC/DSP/FPGA farm" means md5crypt in particular might not have been on FPGA, or were you specifically told that it was?
