On hydrogen - @BloombergNEF research (June 2017) concluded that we could use it for seasonal load shifting/smoothing at a cost of 244 euros per MWh shifted, using electrolysis + fuel cells. With a visible tech pathway down to 119. (Short thread).

And yes, the first try at this typo'd 119 as 199. Sorry!

244 euros or even 119 euros per MWh is expensive power, but it's not totally ridiculous to cover the last 10-20% of grid decarbonisation. So we're not totally dismissive of H2 for seasonal load shifting long term.

It's a bit hard to see nearer term applications though. Fuel cells are high capex too, so you need to be using them a lot to make it worthwhile for home heating. And H2 vehicles are fast losing to EVs.

Key assumption: electrolysis is done when electricity on the German spot market is priced below average (32 euros/MWh) - electrolyser ends up running at about 51% utilisation, using power at average price of 16 euros. Utilisation really matters because electrolysers aren't cheap.

Perhaps we can afford this for the last 5% of grid decarbonisation. would hope intelligent vehicle to grid charge logic would allow us to harness a massive mobile battery storage to meet another 10%. /1

With Demand side management meeting the remaining 5%. A suite of smart grid levers should be more economic than any one technology. /2

Thanks for quantifying this for us. These sort of “how much would it cost to decarbonize in X way” estimates based on actual price and CF estimates are really valuable for informing discussion.
