In 2020 CPD set up a "community safety team" saying it should build partnerships, trust, and connections (but also monitor large events). Now many of its officers will shift to intelligence operations against gangs - with stated goals including drugs and "public disorder." +

2021 continues to be a master class in Ruth Gilmore’s concept of “organized abandonment” i.e. the decades-long project of disinvestment in life-giving systems (healthcare, housing, education, etc) and investment in death-dealing ones (policing, incarceration, surveillance, etc).

BREAKING: The Supreme Court has not responded to our emergency request to block Texas’ radical new 6-week abortion ban, SB8. The law now takes effect. Access to almost all abortion has just been cut off for millions of people. The impact will be immediate and devastating.

For those watching Texas politics. As of today, abortions are banned to “protect the children”. Also, TX school districts are being fined by the State for enforcing masks for children this Fall during a pandemic that’s impacted over 640K people, including kids.

The TX ban on abortion is terrible. A weak word. Grotesque really. Placing the power of policing women in the hands of individuals is a dangerous precedent. This imperils women in so many ways I can hardly wrap my mind around it.
