As the first in my Latinx family to enter a research lab, it wasn't easy to acclimate to the lab environment. I learned (after many faux pas) each lab member has a role — PIs apply for grants, grad students lead projects, coordinators guide data collection, RAs collect data!

Love this! 1) When I was applying, I didn't know (and was lucky enough to have an UG professor tell me) that you essentially apply for the mentor/lab, not the program, and should email the professor you want to work with beforehand to see if they are even accepting students!
-
So true! If you don’t email professors before you apply, you might mistakenly waste money applying to their program (application fees, sending GRE scores).

I have a student RA who started volunteering in a lab when she was in high school. I had no idea that was a possibility when I was at that stage. It's really basic, but I think making folks aware that they can contact research groups and ask about volunteering/positions is key!

@darbysaxbe has mentored students from public and private high schools all over LA. I wish I had known when I was their age!

I remember an experience when a PI asked for me, an RA, to fill out important details on a grant submission. I realized later that, it gets edited, that the PI didn’t have everything figured out yet, and that I had some good ideas. I sometimes use that approach now w/ my team.
-
As a PI now I find myself regularly explaining that I don’t “know” what theory, method, measure, etc is the best or right one. I’m hoping for collaborators on my team to use critical thinking along with me to make decisions. Often there isn’t a right answer we’ll be certain of.

Ask for help w/ lit. reviews! They are cumbersome + overwhelming @ the start! Hands down best resource + visual I have found + share with my students! Love this! I think learning how to advocate for yourself was a big one. Speaking up when you want to collaborate with other members of the lab can really help scaffold learning and builds a greater sense of belonging.

Try to be creative in making almost any class assignment relevant to your program of research - even if you have a tangential idea to the “syllabus” your prof is likely flexible and will appreciate your excitement !
