"Retard" was never used like that
I don't use "retard" because it disappeared from my vocab after school, but i use the term low IQ and brainworms which imo is functionally no different 🥴

Maybe this is a cultural difference?
In the UK as a child, "retard" was used constantly to mean stupid. Never heard anyone use it to refer to mentally disabled ppl
However the word "spastic" was literally used as an insult for people who appeared disabled.
