ABS are currently looking to increase their support for regional conservation projects and that will mean a membership drive to provide additional funding. Can you help by joining us or just share this post? Thank you so much in advance. ABS team.

  2. With the arrival of February we can expect some spring migrants to be returning to our shores. Already Black Kite are coming and some smaller birds, such as Subalpine Warbler, can be expected.

To the coast or the mountains this weekend? Whatever your choice the birding should be rewarding and the weather looks set for warm and sunny days...

Bit of urban birding today, Blue Rock Thrush and Crag Martin occupied the cliffs below the new bridge in Ronda, whilst Red-billed Chough were displaying above. Ronda must rank as one of the best urban birding sites in Andalucía.

Chatting about chats, it came up about the albino Stonechat seen in the Serranía de Ronda. Sorting through records we found the photograph of this beauty.

Bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus), also known as the lammergeier (or lammergeyer), is a real draw for birders visiting Andalucía and prized by locals too!

Yes! Clearing skies and sunshine arrive, nature rejoices after the life giving liquid sunshine of the past 9 days....

With the southern regions of Spain being battered by storms, flooding and cold, a worrying trend being experienced worldwide in a changing climate, is it okay to be nostalgic and think of some brightness to come this spring?

With Andalucía on yellow alert for expected storms today and tomorrow, it seems appropriate to post something reflecting our current state of play!

Another great birding site is the interior of the Sierra de las Nieves National Park. Winter can see good numbers of Fieldfare, Alpine Accentor and of course some not so common birds such as Citril Finch.

25 brave souls attended the field meeting and OGM of the Society on Saturday, the weather cold and wet. Nothing dampens the spirit of our members! Here one of many Golden Plover near to Laguna Dulce..

A few areas of good Hawthorn cover, normally great in the winter for Ring Ouzel etc., is being decimated by red berried Mistletoe. It is a worry.. but this Iberian Grey Shrike enjoyed the absence of others on a well stocked bush..

Sitting quietly off road in the vehicle can produce surprising results as birds get used to the mobile hide... here is a Buzzard normally so shy, but very confiding near the vehicle..

A great birding area is Arroyo de las Ventanas near to the village of Serrato. Good for raptors and mountain species.
