do not come into my replies with comments about blowing up statues or mailing someone anthrax. not only are these not solutions i am interested in, these jokes are profoundly unhelpful. they subject my community to greater state surveillance and non state violence.
i’m sure it’s fun to make an edgy joke online but when you do that in reply to a post about a very real situation, you’re making things worse. you’re creating something people can point to and say, “see, her associates are planning X!”
if you want to joke about this kind of shit, joke about your own problems. i don’t need the nazi who tried to take a hit out on me to get riled up about your bad joke. i don’t need the vigilantes willing to murder me and my friends amped up about a fake bomb threat.
i am all for gallows humor, but it’s only for those on the gallows. if you’re a spectator at this show, you don’t get to make the jokes.
