Massively underestimated: The “cost” of people coming to work knowing things are broken & fearing the next thing breaking. This holds for usability issues, “bugs”, “quality”, elephants in the room, strategy misalignment...anything. The drag and dissonance is extremely costly.

The entire scam of “be your own boss” is just a cover for “cover your own expenses, shoulder your own risk, suffer built-up liabilities”. It’s a tag line that preys on people’s aspirations for a better life while giving them a worse one. It’s cruel, abusive, and exploitive.

Australian firehawks carry sticks already burning from a wildfire & drop them in another area, which sets a new fire; as small mammals & insects race to escape the flames & smoke, they become easy pickings for the raptors.

I love the list of falsehoods programmers believe in. Examples: - Duration of one minute will never be more than an hour - All coordinates are in "Latitude/Longitude" - A single postcode will be larger than a single building Reply with your favorite.

i can go on. people think about abstraction is about hiding details when it's about being able to use those same details everywhere. people think modularity is about keeping code together but it's really about keeping dissimilar code apart, trying to ensure less tangling

So I've just spent many hours chasing down what was causing Stack Overflow to stall for about 1-2 minutes every hour (with a lot of help from ). I think this is an interesting cache story, so I'm going to lay it out in hopes it helps other people.
