Few of us have seen an iron lung, let alone required one to live. This weekend I stumbled upon one at a surprising location: the wonderful art and history museum, .@MuseumLondon in Ontario. It was donated by .@LHSCCanada to remind the public of the scourge of polio.pic.twitter.com/Nbx4Xvvzw8

Many different artificial respirators were built and marketed worldwide in the early-to-mid 20th century but the very first was the Drinker Respirator, named for Philip Drinker, an assistant professor of industrial hygiene at .@HarvardChanSPH in 1928.pic.twitter.com/t6Wosde1wN

Drinker had a background in chemical engineering and was faculty in the Department of Ventilation and Illumination. His published research prior to 1928 tended to focus on industrial pollution, temperature control, etc. Important stuff but pretty far afield from poliomyelitis.pic.twitter.com/ooZn5ZjZyw

The impetus for Drinker's turning his attention to artificial respiration was a chance encounter seeing cyanotic infants struggling to breathe, their intercostal muscles paralyzed by polio, in a ward at .@BostonChildrens.

Together with his colleague Louis A. Shaw Jr., Drinker designed this respirator, first successfully used at the same hospital, to support the breathing of an 8 year old-girl paralyzed by polio, on October 12, 1928.

Later it was mass-produced just around the corner from Boston Children's on Huntington Ave. by the mechanical engineer Warren E. Collins. Drinker & Shaw received great acclaim and recognition for their invention, especially needed after large US polio outbreaks in the '40s-50s.

      7. John Charpentier, Ph.D.‏ @snpsandsnRNPs 21 Oct 2019

Drinker expressed some bitterness that most of his other research never attracted as much attention as his invention of the iron lung, but this may have been influenced by an acrimonious legal battle with an inventor across the Charles in Harvard Square, John Haven Emerson.

Emerson improved the Drinker Respirator, making it lighter, more efficient, and more affordable. Drinker was quick to sue but his plan backfired: Emerson argued successfully in court that Drinker's technology was not sufficiently novel to be patented.

The judge agreed and the patents were invalidated. Today there are only a handful of patients who require these devices, thanks to the eradication of polio worldwide by global vaccination. #VaccinesWork https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gplA6pq9cOs …
