On the contrary, the formula was first discarded (actually added a correction term, now removed) because the experiments in early 80 had a wrong mass for tau.
using the current values listed on Wikipedia I get .666659036
@lucabaldini I'd suggest to use the value 1776.86±0.12 for the mass of tau, following http://pdg.lbl.gov/2018/listings/contents_listings.html …
You are absolutely right! It's even closer... m_e = 0.5109989461 MeV/c^2 m_muon = 105.6583745 MeV/c^2 m_tau = 1776.86 MeV/c^2 => 0.66666051241... (I was using the old value from 2012 https://journals.aps.org/prd/pdf/10.1103/PhysRevD.86.010001 …, page 592)
To calculate relative masses of muon and tau relative to the electron, see Mills' closed-form analytical expressions on the following image. To read the book, see: https://brilliantlightpower.com/book-download-and-streaming/ …pic.twitter.com/FK1bE5JUM2
Notice how the equations only require pi and the fine structure constant. Amazing! :-)
I mean, we can never measure anything exactly, all our measurements of these masses will have some uncertainty involved.
thats why that ≈ exists
You could say We now use this everywhere If you think of it Only pure mathematics is not effected by any quantum change
This is a distribution I get using the current uncertainties as listed in Wikipedia! This thing is quite incredible. Here's my source code for Jupyter https://gist.github.com/corradomonti/e88a4e8746093c68e015539a426a2e95 …pic.twitter.com/F1dRlwCVIZ
I suspect that someday some brilliant particle physicist will come along and discover some new underlying relationship between these particles which clearly shows that *is* exactly 2/3, and why.
The double wavy lines symbolize "about".
Sure, it could be exactly 2/3, and my guess is that it actually is, but we can't jump to conclusions and assume that. It *could* just be a coincidence.
