There are signals in absolutely everything you do, no matter how minute. With enough of these signals they are as unique as a snowflake. Even to people whose entire job is online crime, they are routinely tracked down - based on a few whisps of data - years apart.
It’s also important to note that it’s MUCH easier for people to find you than it is to cover your tracks. I used to hold multiple personas on illegal websites and as vigilant as I was, I occasionally screwed up. Logged in from a NY IP when my persona lived in Louisiana, etc
I noticed it quickly so could give a plausible explanation (and my persona was not known to be particularly tech-savvy, so it seemed believable enough.) Conversely, finding other people because of their trip-ups is often trivially easy, even when people try to be careful.
