The history of racism is complex. You can teach about the lynchings, the deaths, the rapes, the brutality, the voter suppression, the organizing for decades by hundreds of thousands of people, but you have to acknowledge the impact of that struggle. They made real progress.

I think often of the feminist struggle. A little over a hundred years ago, women couldn't vote. In the 1970s, women could not get a credit card in their own name. In the fifties, girls wore dresses to school, and there were no sports teams for girls. So much has changed.
