… from “Unfashionable Pursuits” by Freeman J. Dyson (1981) Dyson should read “Monstrous moonshine and the classification of CFT” by Terry Gannon (1999)!

A maze with no looped paths is mathematically equivalent to a "tree" in Graph Theory - where any two vertices are joined by a unique path. This is why graph theory can help solve mazes! Just imagine stretching the maze's paths out like this:

i feel both enlightened and confused! what do the green/red lines represent? an embedding of the figure 8 knot? does that mean the pink "thorns" are genus 2 tori?

v nice, i love these kinds of illusions! once tried something similar but with a 2-D shape that spins around a vertical axis OR "twists around a ring" kind of ugly, but here's the ambiguous version:

If you're 31 this simple & delicate solar system represents your entire life – it runs at 6 months per second! Planets shown to relative size scale meaning e.g. Earth vs Jupiter size is accurate. Orbital tilts also accurate. (not scaled: planet rotations, sun, orbital distances)

what does one do if they find an "unintentional" AI generated doppelganger of themselves being used as a model somewhere?

wow its like if you could look straight in every direction at the same time!

The graph actually makes some sense and isn’t so surprising once the methodology is understood. If we were to survey people based off their opinion on the same features with similar measures, however vague or crude, I think we’d see similar results.

The graph may seem weird at first, but I think that happens when our own interpretation of musical “complexity” differs from the author’s. That’s totally fine, but I don’t think its fair to completely dismiss the work.

The definition they use is more nuanced then what you quote, which is their def. of "rhythm codewords". They are using the term "complexity" in a precise mathematical manner, which of course, comes with its own meanings and baggage...

i think , , and Rossella Lupacchini make this point quite profoundly in their 1999 paper "Machines, Logic, and Computation" while discussing mathematical proof in the context of quantum computation:

while watching this talk i couldn't help but think of an even more distant and radical future where we might have to leave behind traditional notions of mathematical proof. Especially in extreme cases when a mere human could not possibly check and verify every step.

someone needs to give Kevin Buzzard a bunch of money to do this thing! This whole talk is essentially a pitch to you so listen carefully! "The Future of Mathematics? - Kevin Buzzard"
