For what it's worth, I think strides are being made in that area in games where you're playing your own character. I don't know if the likes of Link, Lara Croft, Samus or Nathan Drake are likely to change any time soon, though.
And sometimes, I think that's important. As an example, there's a generation+ of boys who've grown up HAVING to play female if they want to play Tomb Raider. I don't think that would happen if they could have chosen otherwise, and I think it gives them a strong female character.
You make a good point on that as well. So many people got to play as badass Lara Croft!! I was thinking about the game Tell Me Why that I played recently where it was important to play a specific character with pronouns and gender.
@Frazleytastic , another point to bring up is the fact that it's a third person PoV game. I understand it's messing with your immersion, but if it helps, you can think of yourself as a very detail oriented director/cameraperson.
