My mum had a very similar routine to Mr Ali's - every week she'd rent me a game from the local video place (though I don't think I ever got to the point of them letting us keep one). I played a LOT of very random NES/Genesis games as a result

Which one is the most random one that you remember?

From that period? Either the Captain Planet game, or the Pirates of Dark Water one, I think. The Captain Planet one was really freaking hard, although I was also 6 years old, so... yknow. Weirdest game I remember at all though, has to be this:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Boy_and_His_Blob:_Trouble_on_Blobolonia …

It was pretty cool! I remember one jelly bean turned the blob into stairs, and another turned it into an umbrella for gliding.pic.twitter.com/DIQX8JSfBV

Just remembered my most random game! It was for SNES & it's called Plok. The music was great & the game found ways to be unique. You attack the baddies by shooting out your limbs. If all 4 were gone, you would be hopping around on your torso for a moment.https://youtu.be/hx9vJT4HAcY

That looks awesome! Speaking of throwing parts of yourself, did you ever play Dynamite Headdy? You had to collect different heads for different power ups. There were so many innovative games back then.pic.twitter.com/Jt348MGzyi

I didn't get a chance to get much into Sega games myself since we only had Nintendo consoles. I vaguely remember seeing that at a friend's house but we played Sonic.

A few other games I remember were Earthworm Jim, and Boogerman. Both titular characters made appearances in a fighting game called Clayfighters.

Earthworm Jim is amazing! The saturday morning cartoon was awesome too. I can't remember which Eaethworm Jim game it was I played and played and played, but it had a mini game or level where you had to use a trampoline to catch stuff and, like, Italian accordion music. Epic.
