I've almost always found myself whether by choice or circumstance in a leadership position in some way, shape or form. Discipleship is lacking everywhere. We value teachers more than we value disciplers in the church.

Since the work of teaching/ preaching in formal “church settings” has been elevated in importance...in your mind, what would it take to shape that differently so that the individual responsibility of practical discipleship can be seen seen clearly?

I will say, as a "laymen" (I hate that word), discipling people in a culture where discipleship isn't the norm imo makes it much harder to do.

I see your point. It’s considered odd to offer the opportunity to walk through life together and learn from one another in the process...

so I stopped offering lol. I told them to meet me at the gym at such and such time each week to work on our game and learn from Jesus. I think one day it stood out to me that Jesus told them to follow Him, not wishfully hoped they would accept his invite. He knows He is the way.

Yeah, there's often a lack of intentionality from disciplers, fear of actually leading and inviting people into a discipling relationship. Let's just be friends and see what happens tends to be the result LOL
