I don't think gage is a British word. We use gauge too. Google says gage is an obsolete word. Sorry if this is some inside joke that I am not aware off.
Which is pressure relative to local atmosphere, vs PSIA, which is absolute pressure relative to a vacuum, which you will also see on some pressure readouts.

What’s the difference between “pounds per square inch” and “pounds per square inch gauge pressure”?
Once upon a time I used to drive race cars and PSI was our most important number by a mile. Was I reading it wrong this whole time?? 
One is relative to a vacuum (psi or psia) the other is relative to atmosphere. So something pressurized at sea level will have a gage pressure greater than zero
