I just found out that in French, when you have no idea of what's going on, you're "to the West". Funny thing is, in Portuguese you're "to the East". So clearly our peoples don't get confused in the same cardinal direction.

BTW the rewards of learning a not-widely-spoken language are absolutely enormous. Walk into a bar in Lithuania and speak Lithuanian. Chat with a Georgian taxi driver in Georgian. The world becomes a very different place.

A word I haven't heard in ages, but still sounds so pretty: farfelu(e). It means 'weird, bizarre', but generally in a positive way. We were playing a board game the other day, and my friend said: "Ouais, c'est un peu farfelu comme jeu."

Well. Here we are, the first of February; here's my new blog post! It's my first time writing in Dutch 🇳🇱, and my level is probably only around an A2, so... be kind. 😅 But it's some highlights from my trip to Amsterdam a few weeks back!

My Hindi speaking and listening skills are higher than my writing and reading skills. This evening, I’m having fun killing my brain trying to fight that! 😅 through review and repetition, I’m starting to recognize some letters more easily than others! What are you up to today? 😊

This is sad because at the time I took it as an isolated joke and let it slide. It was only when I started hearing that repeatedly - and realized they were parroting what they had been told in the past by friends and know-it-alls - that I intervened. This perspective must change!

When I was a teacher, I had many students who unfortunately came from less privileged backgrounds. They would often say “I can’t even speak Portuguese properly, let alone English” and it was worse when some shameless peer “joked around” by repeating that to others. People...

Oh my goodness...I just got educated on the music of my own country...I didn’t know this particular fado song and it is so beautiful, so soft that I started crying in the middle of the street in Berlin 😳 amigo obrigada por fazer o meu dia mais especial e pela sua gentileza 🙏❤️

History being made as Britain leaves the EU for good. Heartbreaking, huge loss for all of us. The UK itself might feel side effects: more maps divided. Meanwhile, the recent wave of Brits is welcome to remain in my country, which they have chosen to live happier lives!💛

English can be grisly. 'Remorse' is from the Latin for 'biting hard', referring to the bite of regret that eats away at you. And 'sarcasm' comes from the Greek for 'tearing flesh': a remark so biting it cuts the skin.

My heart warms up so much when I watch videos of traditional Portuguese music (fado) and see comments from so many sweet Brazilians, Dutch, Spaniards, Argentinians, declaring how much they love our dialect, culture, streets, music...I can't help but get teary-eyed! Obrigada!!💛

British people don't do other languages, I was told at a school today. Well, I replied, apart from Welsh, Gaelic, Jèrriais, Cornish, Manx, Guernésiais, Romani, Sercquiais, Irish, Polish, Urdu, Hindi & more, you're probably right. Many minds were changed after that discussion!

Anywhere online where I could create a free video workshop (but not live)? I know there are many online platforms for courses, but what I want to do is just create a short online course for free that people could take without having to create free trials or pay for an account 😊

🇨🇵 Nouveau vs. Neuf Nouveau means new in the sense of new to the owner - a change or improvement. The opposite of nouveau is ancien (former). Neuf means new in the sense of brand new, fresh out of the factory, first of its kind. The opposite of neuf is vieux (old).

Wow, what a refreshing, bold, well-crafted, entertaining show! Even the design is brilliant! Thank you for teaching us more about Indian history and culture (big fan here), while still inspiring Indians to laugh, reflect, be bold and proud of such rich heritage! We want more! 🙏
