Interestingly, is a good way to start getting a grip on this problem. Every node on the private network must have a cryptographic key registered, so the network map must be up to date, by design. We just need some nice viz tools :)

99 smartphones are transported in a handcart to generate virtual traffic jam in Google Maps. Through this activity, it is possible to turn a green street red which has an impact in the physical world by navigating cars on another route!

I wrote down all my sneaky webcam-related tricks to make distributed work interactions feel less ugly and more human. Pass it on to all your remote friends, we’ll all benefit.

Surreal but true: has Group advisor & Harvard Professor teaching journalist security. Irony = dead. Best service to pressfreedom (and the world) step down from toxic commercial spyware company board ↘️

I retweeted this post yesterday, but I urge people who care about encryption online to read it, because this legislation should scare you. I am going to follow with a (much less thorough and accurate) summary thread below.

Cool high-end Thinkpad feature: "ePrivacy display". Basically it's a toggleable polarizing filter built into the display. Tickle an ACPI endpoint, and the viewing angle drops to "straight in front only". Much nicer than those slide-in things that I kept losing or scratching.

Just published “distri: 20x faster initramfs (initrd) from scratch”: Have you ever wondered why initramfs generation takes so long? It doesn’t have to! minitrd generates an initramfs in just ≈400ms, and boots to crypto prompt in just ≈200ms :)

If you have been avoiding to defer for performance reasons, Go 1.14 is going to inline a ton of common cases of defers and make them as fast as regular function calls. I wrote an article on this improvement, see

The irony is that NSO Group uses Amazon Web Services to interact with WhatsApp's APIs. So if NSO was behind the intrusion, then some of the key evidence is available to Bezos' excellent AWS security team.

How computer programming is different from 20 years ago. "Since we have much faster CPUs now, calculations are done in Python which is much slower than Fortran. So calculations basically take the same amount of time as they did 20 years ago."

My 5yo asked, “How big is a wolf?” So I Google it... Google’s first result is the option (in browser!) to place a realistic wolf in the room with us so we can walk around it and see for ourselves. Magical. The closest I have felt to a Young Lady’s Illustrated Primer.

...originally known as Parchman Farm: "Parchman, I believe, is the closest thing to slavery to survive the Civil War. Its story covers the bleak panorama of race and punishment, brutality and paternalism, in the darkest corner of the American South."

If that sounds terrible, it is. And yet: not at all a new concept in the South. Known as 'convict leasing', this was a lucrative way to generate state revenue; in 1898, it represented ~73% of Alabama's entire annual revenue. FDR outlawed it in 1941.
