Breastfeeding is awesome & I will support/empower any mother who feeds her children. But buying into the narrative that breastfeeding is "free" devalues the time & labor required of a nursing mother. A lot of women can't afford the time or resources to be successful with it.

And please don't come at me with the "working mothers can pump because the law requires their employers to give accommodations." Okay... it's also illegal to pay women less than men for the same labor or discriminate based on pregnancy, but here we are.

Nothing prepared me for the reality that—for the first 3-6 months—breastfeeding is a 24/7 job. Not full-time, but 24/7.
-
Exactly! Not all moms can be around their babies 24/7 whether it's for working reasons or just for their own sanity. I didn't have enough milk supply to successfully breastfeed, but the 3 months I spent trying to nurse made me feel like a prisoner to my kid.

It’s a weird time to be a woman...
-
Pretty sure I spent more money on things & resources to try and make nursing "work" for me than I did on a few months' supply of formula. I wish I could have made it work, but I couldn't. The time-consuming aspect took a toll on my sanity too.

If breastfeeding were actually the goal, and not, say, the government saving a whole lot of money on WIC funding, there would be a huge push to encourage fathers/partners/spouses to support breastfeeding people.

My kid is two and STILL hasn’t paid the invoices I submitted when he was a nursing infant. For real, though, NOTHING about breastfeeding came without a price.

My mom about lost it when I decided to stop trying to pump when my baby wouldn’t ever BF and was SUPER fussy and gassy when we bottle fed him. She was passive aggressively making comments about the price of formula and what a waste it was to toss out my freezer full of baggies.

Editor’s note: (couldn’t donate extra stored milk because of medications).
