Dear every engineer making a salary who has said "yeah I just google shit for a living", You're welcome. Love, All the people in the world who live by open source and go a step further to document something in an issue/email/whatever. Those extra 5 minutes are everything.

One of the most valuable lessons I learnt as a developer, is that what gives value to your product is not the implementation of the core functionality, but the iterations refining the UX (which also end taking most of the dev time, the well-known 80%/20% vs. 20%/80%).

I wrote a BPF tool: I always wished time(1) displayed useful statistics like off-cpu time and whether the program was blocked on i/o (or sleeping in userspace). schedtime gives you that info by inspecting callstacks to work out why your app blocked.

It's possible to hack a machine with DMA attacks - you need to be able to hot-plug PCI or firewire device. IOMMU was said to be a decent solution to the problem. But nope. It turns out IOMMU can be still broken because... computers are hard.

That said, I still love Rust, but you have to be aware of things like this to use it properly. 3/3

Yes, it forbids you from acquiring too much tech debt, but also means that if there's a flaw in your design, you may be bound to attempt a deep refactoring. Or worse, you may get into a dead end that kills your project. 2/3

One of the Rust characteristics is that is doesn't allow to take shortcuts while coding. At first sight, this is good thing, but it's actually a double-edged sword. 1/3

A long time ago after SUSE was called S.u.S.E. but before SUSE was bought by Novell there was a relatively brief period where SUSE was SuSE. But that’s like over 15 years ago now. for the majority of its existence SUSE has been SUSE but I guess the old name(s) stick in some heads

Nice talk. In particular, *very* nice, quick but yet really clear overview of the spec. exec. HW vulns. And I really like the "what major cloud providers do about them (when we even know)" angle too

Is it me or is he advocating for enabling the Cental Banks to monitor *each and every transaction* in real time? Is there any evidence that this would improve the efficiency of our economies? If so, how much? Is it worth sacrificing our privacy for it?
