Some of you were working on extremely cool projects, too! ☹️ I'm sad to see this. If any of you are looking for remote-first positions and are interested in developer tools, browser extensions, code search, etc. we have openings

Absolutely zero chance I could ever reproduce this, but while watching some my cat laid down across the keyboard and it crashed the entire page. I wish I had recorded this

Learn how Sourcegraph's multi-repository code search helped ensure (largely) issue-free production deploys during their monolith to decomposition.

this is why many code guidelines today still suggest 80 columns as a limit, for more readable code. It's because of the physical dimensions of the punch cards. And in punch cards, a line longer than 80 (or 72) characters isn't just bad form, it's literally not gonna work.

After this I took a job doing Go software development and haven't looked back at hardware since😉

"Like, literally on fire with smoke coming out of it" "Oh, god! Okay.. well uhh, thanks, let me know when it will be back online?" "Yeah there has been some damage but uh, we'll figure it out and I'll let you know" This is all a 100% true story.

Given this was supposed to be a quick server reboot, I give the lady from IT a call back. I let her know that "Well, I did indeed find the problem ha.. ha" "Oh, what was it?" "It was on fire" "Oh ok, did you try just restarting it?"

Together we manage to rip the server straight out of the rack, and luckily enough the fire went out on its own (thanks to the ungodly thick steel plates on 4Us), the mobo was scorched though. We bring the server back to our quiet office space for inspection.

I notice my coworker is about 20 feet away with a cart, and so I start yelling for him. Of course, data centers being so loud he couldn't hear me. I run over to him and grab him, point in the direction of the server at which point his face just shifts from "boring work day" to

At this point, I'm thinking "Okay, this thing is on fire, it's going to burn down the building and trigger the fire suppression" mind you -- I was warned the fire suppression systems pulled all oxygen out of the air so as to not damage the server hardware.

This was a relatively common request, so I put in my earplugs, swiped my badge, and started to look among all the rows for the right rack. Walking down the rows, I started to get close to the correct one. Then it became clear I indeed had the right one, looked like this:

Once upon a time I was just a wee little intern working to replace RAID drives in a large 2,000 rack data center. I got a phone call from the main office: > Hi, this is Becky from IT. We're having trouble with one of our mail servers, can you reboot it? We can't access it.

I say all of this because it just kills me inside that we're so far from having OSS be a non-hobby sustainable system, and I hoped would get us there but it looks to me now like it will just maintain the status quo.

Proposal: create a stack-ranked list of companies who pledge support to OSS with $$$$ and distribute it to the community by project weight. A company claims to support OSS? Prove it with your pledge rank.

It's also ironic to me that cURL was an example used during the livestream of how could improve OSS, yet the company isn't a sponsor of cURL -- perfect example of why this model isn't enough.

It is good is trying to do something here -- but it's just barely skimming the vast lake of money that is being made off of OSS. There is no way IMHO for this ever to turn into a "professional lucrative career path". Donations from individuals are not enough.
