Concerns about problematic ideological formation strike me as overblown in practice. As debaters mature intellectually, they tend to gravitate towards (and produce) scholarship that aligns with a consistent worldview while still exploring different sides of a topic.
Even people who read rights Malthus or CO2 ag or whatever tend to be good at viewing debate as a game and not attaching to these beliefs. Karl Rove types are inevitable regardless of the activity format; I don't think you can really pin that on debate.
Yes you get comical misreadings of Zeno's Paradox but STEM illiteracy is hardly unique to debate. Yes the agenda politics DA is a tower of lies but political capital theorycrafting is…pretty innocuous overall? I have no justification for negative fiat, you got me there
But all of that aside, I'd challenge you to find better training for the kind of deep knowledge work that people fetishize these days. It blows my mind how debaters learn to curate, annotate, and reference an enormous memex using bespoke tools, all accessible to a high schooler.
And people hugely underappreciate the metacognitive importance of learning a huge, complex ruleset rife with tacit knowledge and a constantly-evolving meta. I can't emphasize this enough: *learning debate meant that I could learn anything else.* It profoundly changed my brain!
Some other day I'll talk about how debate was the best preparation I can imagine for a PhD in computer science or career in software, but in the meantime I would challenge people to make sure they understand what they're criticizing before casting generalizations.
