There was react-native, google scrapping 'app' mode for chrome, bugs in local storage lasting for years, and then the touch screen slowly losing its power for a webpage starting at the edges, then gestures, and now, finally, losing control over the main input area.

Oh and lets also not forget the absolute nightmare of dealing with onscreen keyboard on iOS, multitouch lag, no gesture apis, no access to media.. As a developer->customer it has been an unsellable proposition for a long time to build an app on web.

I have to say a ton of these issues are with iOS safari. But google scrapping chrome-desktop-app-mode was a really strange move as well. They had a good shot at eliminating the crapheap that is electron and bailed on that. Very strange.

Or do you mean scrapping Chrome Apps? if it's that, we've a bunch of things coming with Desktop PWA

K well i don't know whats coming :) I just see that as a company i have to ship electron again if i want a web-desktop-app, and not a consistent motion towards using web for apps.

I'm using it now... althought to be fair, this is Chrome OS, the plan is to bring it to Windows and Mac using normal add to homescreen mechanismspic.twitter.com/qQflqFwpj2

Now if only apple could get on board with this idea as well, that'd be swell. Web as an app mechanism is close but we have to see consistent motion towards this goal and not randomly ripping features out making it extremely risky as businesses.

From apple on desktop i have chrome, but from apple on iOS i would like them to make add-to-homescreen a proper 'app' that doesnt reset the page when multitasking, that leaves me in control of the touch area and working local storage (although that may be fixed)

http://Web.app (apple's homescreen app shell) needs work for sure, but I trust it will improve. Lots of people are starting to ask about these issues.

Well lets hope they start by not killing 'app mode' entirely. They recently started ignoring the meta zoom/pinch directives in both http://web.app and safari because of accessability issues with sites that used it when they shouldnt.

Feels very much like a set of requests to direct at Safari/Apple peeps rather than Chromies, but yeah, really hope this improves. iOS Safari is a huge pain for folks doing ambitious work.
