It's really, *really* important for web developers & others who care about the web to understand how poorly the web performs in emerging markets -- and why that re-enforces the centralizing position of top-10 native apps.

Meanwhile blog posts on https://blog.google/  are still shipping over 20 MB, literally.

Google sites are not absolved of having to do work here too. In the case of http://blog.google , I've raised the issue of (massive) image bloat with them before. They've committed to fixing their image processing pipeline & looking at setting tighter upload size limits.

It's a good example of how this is a shared ecosystem problem. How do we make default experiences performant? What standard organizational and development practices exist that make producing a performant experience like finding a needle in a haystack.

This gets back to incentives. The browser never told anyone (developers, end-users) that the blog was bad and should feel bad. That's the browser failing to serve users.

How about @addyosmani and you put giant red spew from lighthouse right in the dev console? Make it on by default 🤪
