Perhaps the hardest part to understand and appreciate is the extent to which the people who should be fighting for these users aren't. The board of @mozilla has a lot to answer for, given their mission: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/mission/ https://twitter.com/slightlylate/status/979097423510294529 …

I like to think we have a lean, mean engine here in WebKit. Actually the most lean-n-mean.
Do your frustrations apply to us too or is this Mozilla-specific? Have I missed some context? Are we talking evangelism or engine work here? -
I like me some modern

This is more than a little arrogant and condescending to those of us who have been working for a decade on Web performance, Alex.

I accept all failures to communicate with care accurately. Got a product roadmap for Fennec? Marketing plan? Strong show of support at a recent all-hands? I can only judge what I can see...and it's weak sauce.

Your argument would carry a lot more weight if you also argued for Android to come pre-packaged with alternative browsers. You *know* how nearly impossible it is to get users to install a non-default browser without a billion $ in marketing, especially on mobile.

When the mobile web is largely WebKit/Blink-centric and when few mobile users install another browser, it's a hard market to break into. When you're a comparatively small organization with a comparatively small marketing budget, how do you go about it?
-
Make a thing people want. UC did this. It's neither impossible nor unlikely; but it does involve understanding those users *better*.

I snarked at this; deleted it. But I do wonder whether you ask yourself what happens when only a google sized company can play in shaping the web; can keep up with the wave of new specs; and when only google’s left, whether you honestly think your bosses can be trusted.
-
And whether you’re bothered by the cavalier way other google products play then “oops only Chrome” game and think that isn’t a colossal drain on everyone’s time playing spec tag instead of these investments you castigate is for not having the resources to pursue.
