And so in the trump era, "us" vs. "us" is tribal vs. law-abiding. In the frame of the Enlightenment, this is some basic shit. But we aren't collectively committed to that any more. It's terrifying to note as much.

And to be clear, I don't mean "law-abiding" in the "white people don't have issues with cops" sense. I mean in the hope-for-our-future sense: we all should be treated equally under equitable law. Giving up on that is Trumpism, abiding it is now a liberal tenant. Crazy.
