When you click on add to homescreen, AFAIU it will ask a server to give you a WebAPK for that site, which is generated on the fly (probably cached if someone else asked for it before and there were no changes). /cc @Paul_Kinlan @firt

Apk is generated on a server and installed via gms core. If you don't have an internet connection it will likely default to bookmark on honescreen.

Is it just me or is this a bit of hack? The package is only necessary to fit into the legacy packaged app model used by Android. Although currently necessary for deep Android integration, I'd argue it's not really how the Web App Manifest specification was intended to be used.

You could also argue that APKs are an integrated part of the Android security and sandboxing model, hence you need to create APKs

I'd argue it's both. Building a high-fidelity integration is always give & take. We can't define Android's model, and Anrdoid speak APKs...but this too shall pass.
