Me, when I have patience: Yes, that would be nice. Right now we sell one thing so we do have time to contribute to the community for free, and when I find a way to give it away sustainably I’d love to. Small businesses are good & pave the way for others to make a living like this

Definitely keep questioning ethics, that’s healthy But also support small businesses and people trying to make a living outside of big corporations Making a living off FOSS as a small business is possible but not easy or good for all products. And big corps have other problems

I’ve worked hard not to take VC money for a reason— despite everyone saying “that’s the way the world works”— & I believe in FOSS. I believe in idealism & working toward unconventional solutions. I welcome ideas on how to make Basis FOSS. They can’t ignore a need to make a living

They also can’t ignore the ethical impact the business model itself has. My current model paves the way others to make a living happily and independently. “Go work on FOSS for a big corporation” involves supporting the ethics of that big corporation and the ways they make money

I think the VC startup world hasn’t helped, stereotyping small companies as destructive and exploitative entities who treat people badly. Whereas in many other industries (think local restaurants) small businesses are gems in communities that make the world better.

Let's not prematurely lionize the living-wage-opposing restaurant industry. They might be gems, but we aren't paying enough for them either.
