What was the first time "components" (i.e. reusable, encapsulated pieces) were used to build user interfaces on the web?

Doing projects was a harder then. Sourceforge was a roach motel, but doing better required setting up a lot of infra. I did lots of admin.

I personally racked/set-up/maintained a ton of the original project infra: mailman, cvs/svn, trac, shell accts, etc. etc.

In early toolkits there were much larger gaps to close: IE 4/5/6/ vs. Netscape DOM (zomg IE 5 for Mac DOM was baaaaaaaaaad).
