There were widget systems before Dojo; it was actually the amalgamation of a few predecessors (including mine, "nWidgets").

We did Dojo because dhtml community was dying circa '04. Needed to join forces to keep tools viable.

Nearly everyone was contributing either their IP from a pre-existing tool (licensing it to us) or actively contributing code.

Folks like Paul Sowden (who was critical to early releases) and @novemberborn joined later. All had built libraries/frameworks in Dark Ages.

I think a lot of this history passed out of view because it was pre-github and http://DHTMLCentral.com (the old watering hole) got hacked.
