I mean, it can't hurt, but surely the reason display isn't great is that the image has to be downloaded to get size, when it's unspecified?
Weight/network cost defo a factor. Though, I've seen quite a few traces lately that were blocked by overly heavy image decodes.
Those shouldn't be main-thread, right? Raster might be blocked, but the threadpool for decodes mostly shouldn't keep you from getting to TTI
(the obvious exception being when you're at the concurrency limit, which does happen a non-trivial amount)
I've been surprised tbh at how often the concurrency limit gets hit (seeing more often in image heavy gallery/media sites).
Just to be clear, you're saying main-thread responsive, but critical-path raster delayed (jank or delayed content)?
Unless this changed recently: Decoding a large image (>10MB) will jank the phone. These occur very frequently in the wild. DSLR -> Web
I know there's been work in this area this year. Unsure of status. Will try to find.
