If SW means the user gets the content they want quicker, that's less battery to the screen, possibly radio too.

https://developers.google.com/web/updates/2015/12/background-sync … is a good example, it allows the user to stop using their phone sooner, rather than staring at the screen.

Keeping the radio and screen spun up are key contributors to battery drain. Also, note that SWs are not persistent. Shut down when unused.
