I discovered trying to teach yourself enough of a CS degree to pass the interviews is hard if you haven't done it before. Lots to learn.

I'm not doubting it is valuable - just as looking at other languages, etc. I'm just saying if you cut out folks for non-CmpSci, seems unwise

Well, exactly. Most people do this - preparing just for the interview, because you don't keep all that in head for normal occasions.

And if they all just learn for the interview, isn't the interview biased? What long-term qualities can it reveal?

An interview which requires prior study tests for other things than what it claims to, e.g. how much free time the candidate has.
