Forgive me, I'm confused about what the comparison is: is it SSR/no SSR? Or polymer vs other fw and SSR? Or no fw? And what type of app?

Because seems like if you're building something not that complicated, it's a different consideration than dynamically generated content

One nuance I think a lot of developers don't realize is that even native things like <a> and <select> don't work if the main thread is busy.

And in some browsers/cases even scrolling, so the SSR concern can apply to content sites as much as app-like sites.

In the tests I've run I've seen SSR to improve the metrics, not hinder it- do you have a comparative example of what you're referring to?

I'm not suggesting SSR isn't good or can't ever help. I just suspect many developers don't realize how much a busy main thread affects UX.

All I want is for devs to measure (as you have!) and base their decisions on data rather than just assuming SSR will make everything fast.

I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow, so I doubt it'll make it unfortunately. But this might be helpful for now :) https://developers.google.com/web/updates/2017/06/user-centric-performance-metrics …

If there's anything to take away here, it's that TTI is probably ur-metric. Optimise for that first.
