Back when I did proper dev, it was the more complex & focused selectors that had issues, not the simple (if widely applied) ones.

Modern—post-neolithic—browsers have very little trouble with any kinds of selectors in almost all circumstances. Negligible perf effect.

I know nobody wants to hear this, but if you're worried about style impact, scoping styles w/ Shadow DOM will help w/ scalability.

Shadow DOM creates simpler lookups which insulates the elements and rules inside from the global resolution system.
