for e.g., it was always said that using universal selector is v slow, using a simple id selector is esp. fast. Is that still true? etc etc

Back when I did proper dev, it was the more complex & focused selectors that had issues, not the simple (if widely applied) ones.

Modern—post-neolithic—browsers have very little trouble with any kinds of selectors in almost all circumstances. Negligible perf effect.
