I wonder if @slightlylate has any thoughts about WebAssembly in the context of the Extensible Web Manifesto? #extendthewebforward

I do! WASM isn't want most people think it is; very much a bolt-on solution for narrow cases today

In other systems, assembly is at the bottom of a tall stack; other things are eventually described in terms of it...

...but WASM doesn't explain any of the web platform. I think that's a missed opportunity, but I understand how we got here.

One positive outcome of WASM will be that it adds pressure to define a memory model for DOM which, in turn, helps layering

hmm, this is very interesting! thanks for sharing. it _does_ seem like it'll help encourage userland JS implementations ...

... of platform features that might not be prioritized atm (e.g. new image formats). I definitely see how it doesn't explain anything tho.

Those userland JS implementations will still be a thunk away from all the interesting bits (DOM) and won't be able to affect it.

Fundamentally, that's uninteresting in a world where transpilers exist.

The best mental model for WASM today is a faster ASM.JS: DOM still where's it at for all the goodies, but faster exec.

I *am* excited about WASM for things like encode/decode of image/video formats

sure, and that's the exact model I have for it. but you need "faster asm.js" for some things like en/decoding. (agreeing w/ you to be clear)
