Sure is... But you are going to block every request until you fetch the remote obj since you need to fetch to determine if it is stale

No it's possible, it just means your time to serve content is bound by your RTT time

Yep, the benefit of SWs (particularly for top-level request) is to insulate you from network latency & variance
