I think Android have an illusion of browser choice. WebViews/Custom Tabs, PWAs all run Chrome. This will probably happen for all platforms.

Concretely here are the main Android browsers, all have SW. True many (but not all) are chromium derivatives, but still separate impls.pic.twitter.com/JpakC0TQ7X

See https://www.smashingmagazine.com/2016/10/whats-the-deal-with-the-samsung-internet-browser/ … for some details, including Samsung explaining why they ship two separate browsers on all their Android devices.

Sorry, clearly hit a nerve here. I can't sleep, keep thinking "How can any web expert believe browser choice on Android is an illusion?"

1) I'm not questioning the ability to ship a different engine on Android, but which one that's the default for WebViews, PWA's, etc.

2) Browser choice today is more than the ability to ship an engine, as the web is an underlaying runtime integrated everywhere.

3) Each platform seems to move into a direction where they have a "preferred" web runtime that powers "apps", as a forced choice.

4) I don't know if this is good or bad yet, but I understand the reasoning for shipping a "tightly integrated" engine with the OS.

Kenneth, I suggest you dig more deeply into the experience of users in EM re: Android. Browser competition alive, well, and thriving.

UC browser is HUGE. Many (most?) massive apps in China use non-OS-provided webviews.

And you should try a Samsung device. PWAs work great from S Browser.

So I get where you're going with the narrative, but it isn't supported by the lived reality of the ecosystem you're discussing.
