: our COM was (mostly) kosher. But no, those patches were often for compiler/linker bugs.
/cc @nasko @ericlaw @imelven @metromoxie
: I think the real change happened when we added mac/linux builds and devs could use them
/cc @nasko @ericlaw @imelven @metromoxie
: team moved from "we make a great windows browser" to "we make a browser; also on win32"
/cc @nasko @ericlaw @imelven @metromoxie
: half of this is on MSFT. If NTFS wasn't such utter shit, builds would've been livable
/cc @nasko @ericlaw @imelven @metromoxie
is the NTFS stuff measured and written somewhere?
: I'm sure someone did once. Probably on a dying wiki page. TL;DR: MSFT doesn't care about super heavy I/O & it shows.
hm. I've heard "MSFT doesn't care about <x>" in too many cases where reality proves more complicated.
: I'm sure it's very complicated! Regardless, it has ~always been faster to build on same hardware on Linux.
: so the lunchroom conversation always went like: "oh man, so slow to rebuild on Windows..."
: "yeah, but debugging's great" "good point" "but have you built on Linux? ZOMG. Gotta try it. Ask mal@ for an extra workstation"
.@ericlaw: takeaway was always that everyone always wanted a setup where they could:
1.) build on linux
2.) debug on windows
3.) run on mac
