If Uber signing up for a spot in Uptown Station gets the construction going again, maybe it's not the worst thing that could happen.

Oh! Also! One interesting tidbit of Uptown Station: it's supposedly going to feature an elevator from 19th st bart direct into the building…

The elevator has been there forever, for Bart riders to get into Sears. But when it needed repairs, they locked it off instead.

So, all of ya'll worrying about Uber techbros corrupting Oakland with their SF cooties? Unlikely. They won't need to even go outside.

Personally, I think this is kind of a bad thing. It means that tech workers working in Oakland will stay segregated.

Walled castles are a particularly obnoxious form of violent gentrification. (Qv also: The Uptown apartment buildings. Total castle.)

Bottom line: Situation is complicated, implications are hard to guess, gentrification is a mess, all heroes are villains and vice versa.

I love this town. Change is inevitable. Gentrification is failure to care for communities in the face of that inevitability. It's violence.

*Of course* tech companies were always going to move here. *Every* company is a "tech company" in the fullness of time. It's not the 50s.

It's not useful to decry "tech culture" as the enemy. WE ARE TECH CULTURE. So I try to sweep up my own yard, and advocate for Good.

@izs: we can manage the increase in density or we can treat it like a crisis (current M.O.). It's a *choice*1 reply 1 retweet 2 likes -

@slightlylate Yes, this is ABSOLUTELY a failure of local government, and I suspect you and I are in the most violent of agreements.1 reply 0 retweets 4 likes - 7 more replies
