There's an asymmetry here: I don't post most of what I see to spare folks embarrassment; it's rare that folks want the before/after comparison public. I make exceptions for public sector work as we're all paying for that...but you should know that brokenness is now pervasive.

I guess what I’m saying in this case is that Etsy (for example) has perf problems, but we know it and we’re working hard on it. If this kind of tweet came out about our site, I’d be embarrassed, angry, and hurt. I wouldn’t be _more_ motivated.

I think it's really important for developers to stop thing their self-esteem and worth to the things they build. Alex isn't talking about who's a "good developer". He's saying people can get to potentially life-saving information and people don't seem to care about that.

.... He
is talking about who is a good developer. A community is made of people. The React Community isn't the React toolchain.
Perf can be important AND being an asshole can be counterproductive.1 reply 0 retweets 3 likes -
Counterproductive to who? People who can't do a good job unless they're constantly getting congratulated? Yeah I'm kind of okay with that.

Counterproductive to the effort of improving web perf... Or maybe you think the best coach is the one who tells their players to "suck less"? Thanks for the actionable advice chief.

I do actually. I think telling developers that they are not meeting expectations when it comes to web perf is step one. The best coaches don't say "you missed the basket, but you're doing great!"

It's also a terrible analogy because some of the winningest coaches are indeed huge assholes. You're not even here to have the actual discussion. Just say we're some big meanies and go. I won't lose any sleep.

I celebrate improvement. If you're getting closer to the mark, I'll cheer that even if you're missing. It's the not caring about hitting the target that's a problem.

That's a super reasonable position, but there are toolchains focused specifically on this problem. React OOTB can be better, Dan is even tweeting in your defense. But if I stumble onto your tweet, I certainly wouldn't find the fix.

The most effective fix, usually, is to pick a different stack. E.g.:https://tom.loosemore.com/2020/04/19/shonky-coronavirus-react/ …
