There's an asymmetry here: I don't post most of what I see to spare folks embarrassment; it's rare that folks want the before/after comparison public. I make exceptions for public sector work as we're all paying for that...but you should know that brokenness is now pervasive.

I guess what I’m saying in this case is that Etsy (for example) has perf problems, but we know it and we’re working hard on it. If this kind of tweet came out about our site, I’d be embarrassed, angry, and hurt. I wouldn’t be _more_ motivated.

I think it's really important for developers to stop thing their self-esteem and worth to the things they build. Alex isn't talking about who's a "good developer". He's saying people can get to potentially life-saving information and people don't seem to care about that.

I’m not disagreeing with him on his point — that the site is slow and that user experience needs to be better. I’m upset about his methodology. I would love to see a leader trying to inspire rather than put down.

Yeah I know what you're getting at. I'm not misunderstanding you. What I'm saying is I'd love to see people address the actual issue before worrying about the tone of one person on the internet.

Are you ready to spend your energy being that inspiration Ben? Or is your contribution just to tell people that you don't like it when they go on their own personal space and show perfectly understandable frustration about the issue they have made essentially their life's work?

We spend a lot of time coddling developers. I personally think more people need to get yelled at. Especially when we're talking about delivering timely information during a global pandemic.

A literal billionaire excluded poor users with bad tech...IDK where the invisible line is, but this isn't it.

Not to mention that "inspiration" has never resulted in devs giving a shit about slow devices. None of these arguments have anything to do with better outcomes. It's all about folks hurt feelings.

Etsy hires people out of boot camps pretty frequently. A lot of these folks learned React there bc that’s what’s taught. As a senior dev, I can’t send these people to follow him when they ask for who knows a lot about perf, bc I don’t want to send them to another angry white guy

I'm always happy to work privately with teams that want to improve.

And again, that’s great! But waiting an hour and a half after the initial tweet to then offer help doesn’t make it seem like improving the site was your goal. It makes it seem like your goal was to score points.
