Most people aren’t trying to build bad software. They’re trying to build as best they can within fixed constraints. One constraint is when industry voices attack and belittle them rather than reaching out to help. Who could read this and ever feel safe asking him for help?https://twitter.com/slightlylate/status/1251668620335214592 …

I guess what I’m saying in this case is that Etsy (for example) has perf problems, but we know it and we’re working hard on it. If this kind of tweet came out about our site, I’d be embarrassed, angry, and hurt. I wouldn’t be _more_ motivated.

That's why it's so damned rare that I post these. This was just a wildly egregious example at the end of a long week of egregious examples.

People react with shock and horror when you point it out -- again, it's rare that it gets shown, even in cases where the JS bloat is so bad that it destroys business -- but what I'm showing here is just one crystal example of a pervasive, omnipresent odor of failure.

Here's a way to get your head around the scale of how bad it is: go to http://webpagetest.org/easy , select "Mobile -- Regular 3G" and plug in 4 or 5 random urls from the "showcase" or "our users" page from a popular "modern front-end" tool.

Alex, attacking the entire community around React is not ok to do, ever. Accusing people of having bad intentions where none exist is not ok to do, ever. Using your disproportionately large podium to "put people in notice" is... not a good look.
-
I didn't claim bad intentions, only demonstrated bad outcomes. They're everywhere in the React ecosystem should you go looking. I recommend looking. The follow-on question is, when this particular tool is involved, why are the results reliably bad?

If you don't shame them at the start, there would be nothing to be ashamed of. It would just be an article "How page load time was improved in case study X"
-
Especially if it's just a few easy to implement tweaks. Everyone would love to read that!
