I don't usually do this, but it's about public health and this site is getting a lot of press and HOLY !*#$ WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE REACT COMMUNITY!?: https://www.webpagetest.org/result/200419_RQ_7d92404e9fc558919d13effd65fde874/ …

I agree with the sentiment that things like this should be incredibly accessible ...but how do you blame a whole ass community for this? As if someone who uses React is responsible for this website being unperformant?

This is a microcosm of the culture of performance failure that follows React everywhere it goes. A perfect, distilled instance of a trend that's so vast it's nearly impossible to get one's head around.

I think it’s a little misplaced blame though. Is it better for this to exist and be unperformant, or not exist at all?

Like I said, you’re not wrong. But the community are also the people who are keeping people connected and informed right now. I don’t think that’s the place to put blame.

It's a community that could be pitching in to fix and prevent these sorts of things. As with so many failures in this time of crisis, what we're observing here is simply the acceleration of pre-existing trends. Sites broken-by-default w/ JS was a problem before, now amplified.

Exacerbated inequality -- in this case, differential ability to access public health content -- is something the React team, community leaders, and influential folks should have been pushing on years ago. Healed or not, crises rip dressings off of wounds.
