"Software becomes 'legacy' at the point when the consensus around it has become that the cost of change is—all else equal—greater than the potential benefit, by default." Curious what you think about this.

Also don't just vote — describe your thoughts! This is something I think about a lot, but want to hear from others.

“Legacy software” as generational transition / “context in RAM”https://mobile.twitter.com/garrett_wollman/status/1249829807648538624 …
Dave Guarino added,
Garrett Wollman @garrett_wollmanReplying to @allafarceDisagree. Software becomes "legacy" at the point when most of the people involved in shaping it and who understood the original requirements have moved on to other things, such that questions about the implementation can no longer be answered from first-hand knowledge.2 replies 0 retweets 2 likesShow this thread -

“Legacy” as an emotional midpoint of the teamhttps://mobile.twitter.com/Orangetronic/status/1249830371769954308 …
Dave Guarino added,
Orangetronic @OrangetronicReplying to @allafarceThis seems like a useful definition, although I also think there are more emotional or cultural definitions. E.g. "We consider that system to be legacy because we don't write things that way anymore, even though we can easily make modifications there when we need to"1 reply 0 retweets 2 likesShow this thread -

"Legacy" as the point when the *uncertainty* of change breaks a certain thresholdhttps://twitter.com/jtbetz/status/1249838556778029058 …
Dave Guarino added,
jtbetz @jtbetzReplying to @allafarceThere's something I'd want to add around the unknown to the cost of change. Eg, sometimes the problem with legacy code is that you can't determine what it would take to achieve the benefit in question short of making the change. Or, you can't estimate the downside risk of change.1 reply 0 retweets 3 likesShow this thread -
I'm honestly surprised that we're running ~5:1 agree at this point.
