I mean, my internship project at Opera was "write a cross browser test runner and triage failures from a testsuite with tens of thousands of tests". Then after internship was put into JS team as tester… despite scarcely knowing JS. That was one way to learn JS.

(to be clear: I was already a known entity from being around standards communities and had done a minimal amount of contribution to some browsers, so I wasn't a totally fresh egg, but still…)
